Rio Tinto and Glencore held early merger talks, Bloomberg reports
Bloomberg reported that the two companies discussed combining their businesses as recently as late 2024, but that the talks were no longer active. Rio was worth about $103bn and Glencore about $55bn. A merger would have created a rival to BHP.
Why it matters. Leaked talks put a target in play and show which deals the market thinks possible.
